As a Survivor of Abuse, I’m Going to Love Differently.

**PLEASE NOTE: This post was written anonymously by a student**

There are events in a person’s life that result in a turning point of sorts, that changes the path that their life may have taken if certain events hadn’t happened. For some, it’s hard to pinpoint when these events happened. For others, they become nightmares hard to outrun.

The events in my past that haunt me changed the way that I receive and give love, and drastically changed who I could have been. I often ponder the person I could have been, and also I grief for the loss of this girl I could have been. How this girl could have received love that is different than how I receive it, though I’m not sure I can love any differently.

Humans of UOIT Project

The UOIT Mental Health Services wants to hear YOUR mental health story for the Humans of UOIT project.

Those interested in participating will be asked to send in, or meet face to face with myself, and discuss their mental health journey. Those interested in remaining anonymous are welcome, that can also be discussed further via email. But, each post will require a short paragraph describing your journey along with a photo of yourself or something that’s meaningful to your journey if you choose the anonymous approach.

If you are interested in being a Human of UOIT, please email the Student Life Line (studentlifeline@uoit.ca.)

Tips for Friends: Staying Healthy During Exam Time

With the exam period of the Fall 2016 semester quickly approaching, a student’s mental health is very important to a successful end of the semester. Stress is obviously a problem with students as exams, essays, labs, part-time (or full-time) work, and other extra circulars begin to add up toward the end of November and into early December.

In hopes of assisting UOIT students with dealing with their stress, we asked upper year UOIT students about what they do, and have done, to stay on top of their stress.

Events on Campus: Remembrance Day Ceremony

Lest We Forget.

By John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, we all pause as a country to remember and give thanks to the men and women who gave their life for our country. We make a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion to wear a poppy, as a symbol of respect, thanks and remembrance.

We remember our Grandparents, aunts, uncles, mothers, fathers, siblings and friends who answered the call of their country. We give thanks to the ones who made it back home, and mourn the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice.

To those in active duty who continue to fight for Canada, and those who are present at Remembrance Day Ceremonies all across the country; from the students, faculty and staff at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology; we thank you for your sacrifice and we will remember them.
