Beginning this Monday, September 28th, the 2nd annual Indigenous Awareness Events will be happening on campus. Below is a list of the events that will be taking place next week, including instructions on any of the events that need to be registered to join.
Students are encouraged to collect a SEC passport, and to attend at least 2 events during the week to be entered for a chance to win a gift basket or a $100.00 gift card for Shop 61 or the Campus Bookstore. (Attend more events to increase your chances of winning!)
Monday, September 28th
To start the awareness week off, you are invited to ‘Get an ‘Ear’ful – Welcoming Celebration’ which will be hosted in Polonsky Commons from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The event will include traditional Indigenous drumming, dancing, and a corn roast! No registration required for this event, and it is open to students, faculty, and staff.
Tuesday, September 29th
Students are welcome to stop by the UOIT-Bagwating Indigenous Student Centre (UBISC), located at beside 61 Charles Street, to grab a free fried bread taco lunch and learn about the services that are offered to students through the Indigenous Student Services at the ‘Meet, Greet and Eat’ event.
Wednesday, September 30th
On Wednesday, students who registered are able to come and make their own moccasins. ‘Sole Searching – Make Your Own Moccasins’ is when students will learn how to create their own moccasins, that is currently filled and has a waiting list.
Thursday, October 1st
‘Beading with Andy’ will give students the chance to learn traditional beading techniques, and they will walk away with a creation all of their own making. The even starts at 10 a.m. and will go until 4 p.m., lunch will be provided at noon.
Friday, October 2nd
Finally, to end the 2nd annual Indigenous Awareness week, students are invited to stop by UBISC between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to make their own Dream Catchers!
