Continue the Conversation: JacksGap

Normally a travel vlog on youtube, JacksGap took a moment a couple of months ago to talk about mental health issues. “Mental illness is a thing,” he said during the candid 3 minute long video. “It exists, in fact 1 in 4 people are affected by it.” He went on to say that if you don’t know someone who’s suffered from a mental illness, than they haven’t come forward because of the stigma that surrounds mental health.

Even though mental illness is getting more and more treatments for it, and we are becoming better versed in mental illness. As the years go on, we are learning more and more about mental illnesses. But, we aren’t talking about mental illness nearly as much as we should. According to Jack, the stigma surrounding mental illness isn’t surprising. “Mental illness is generally something that’s wrong with the brain,” he said. “The brain is the control center…and the idea that there is something wrong with the control center, basically says that we are out of control.”

Throughout the video, he is avid that we need to break down the stigma. The only way to do that is to have conversations about them, and to stop shaming the people who suffer from them. By not talking about mental health, we are accomplishing nothing. He encouraged his viewers and subscribers to start the conversation on the internet, and to reach out to people around them and start the conversation.

“Mental illness is an illness, not a weakness.”

Let's discuss this.
